.. we tried the south side first so we could stay out of the large waves on the
north side . we pulled a sein about a dozen times and caught a dozen smelt and a
lot of other odd fish.. so we thought we would try a pull or two on the north
side and in about an hour or two we had a 5 gallon pail full along with my
waders. thanks for the web site

The wind is strong and from the east, seining the point is out.

It sounds like the rivers are picking up though.

Captain Peter

Went down to the lester last night and was getting 1 smelt out of every 5 dips or so. Some of the guys down there would occasionally get a dozen in one dip. It was starting to pick up a bit as i left around 11 - after taking a wave in the waders.

You need a minnesota fishing license. You might have trouble finding a smelt net a night. A few place that carry them are. marine general, gander mt, Walmart? You can't keep trout that you catch in your net

If the water is still 39 at the  French, it's a bit to cold for the little smelts to run.

I heard there were no smelt in the Lester last night. I did hear of a single smelt caught in Ashland WI.   The sun has  been warming the rivers perhaps by the week end we might see a run.. Don't neglect the knife river. I usually fish right along the old highway between the two bridges. Sometimes they run at the knife before the lester.

It looks like the run is just about done.  The minnows and exotics are there feeding on the smelt spawn. I'm sure there are some trout and salmon feeding on the minnows as well.
